Quad9 Indian Server Location

I love Quad9’s service & am continuing to use it over my ISP, CloudFlare, Google and numerous other DNS service providers as Quad9 is both swift & safer.


I had a quick question, as per this tweet, Quad9 have a server in Mumbai, India & Columbo, Sri Lanka; which are closer to Chennai. However, I did a trace route and noticed I’m being responded from Singapore.

I’m not sure why Singapore is preferred over within the country & neighbouring country servers which are closer in terms of distance. I had few theories, then I recollected learning about international fiber optical networks and then it struck me!

My ISP ACT Broadband is routing to Tata Communications/VSNL, this is expected as Tata is the Tire-1 with a landing in Chennai.

I hope there is a national optical fiber network which connects Mumbai & Chennai; and I know as a matter of fact that TIISCS directly connects Chennai with Singapore with its submarine fiber optic cable.


Then I looked into the cable landing points in India and the various international cables that touches each of the nodes.

Chennai is a cable landing point for 4 cables (more on this later)

  • BBG – This is not used as Chennai needs to connect to Malaysia to reach Sri Lanka and then Mumbai
  • i2i – Possible as this is direct Chennai to Singapore, also connects with SMW3; owned by Airtel though
  • SeaMeWe-4 – Connects directly from Chennai to Sri Lanka & Singapore and then Sri Lanka to Mumbai; owned by many including Tata and Airtel
  • TIISCS/TIC – As stated earlier, direct Chennai to Singapore, Tata owned

So with BBG & i2i removed from the equation, the remaining two directly connects Chennai with Singapore where TATA has its presence. Now I understood why my queries are routed the way it was.


Anyways, no matter which provider I choose, its more or less of the same story.

Since there is not much of a difference between the top services, I’m going with the safety net of Quad9 over the others. Whatever it is, even while I’m getting 1-2ms pings from my ISP’s DNS, sometimes even 0ms! I’m not going to use their DNS. I’m using VPN with/or DNSSEC/DNSoTLS service providers just because I can and I prefer it that way.

  • Cochin – 2
  • Thiruvananthapuram – 1
  • Puducherry – 1 (TBF)

As per https://www.quad9.net/12-new-quad9-cities, I understand and support their ideology; but I secretly wish that they put up one more server for India in Chennai.

Mumbai can act for the north India while Chennai can cater to South. Anyways, I’m quite happy with where Chennai is at, in the large scheme of things.

State of my Windows Phone – 03rd Feb 2015

Phone is 30fps I guess, 60fps video looks somewhat lag/slow or the other way around.


He is such a gem. Doggies are epic, certainly a man’s best friend!

Nokia Lumia 830 – Thoughts

When you qi charge it, the metal around the phone heats up like the way Nexus heats up with TYLT VU. Also the top left part near the USB also heats up when you connect a powerful charger when the phone is low at 10%. The thing here is, since the battery is low the phone tries to charge as fast as possible and makes the metal to heat like in the qi. When you have enough power, there is no metal heat either way (qi or USB). When the battery is quite low, the frame heats as hell.

720’s display will heat up if you have the screen on for hours. There is nothing as such with the 830. Do note that both are IPS LCD with CBD polarizers. Nokia did something with the display here.

The oleophobic coating on the CGG3 is awesome and seems that it will last a very long time.

There is a subtle light bleed near the three capacitative keys, not noticeable generally unless you look at it in a particular angle in pitch dark with maximum brightness.

The three keys on the right screams excellence. So much so that I turned off double tap to wake, just to push myself into the habit of pressing the metal lock key to wake the phone up every time. Also the two-stage shutter key works brilliantly. All three has nice clicky feel to it.

The phone is a little top heavy. When you hold the phone with all your fingers below the camera module, in order to not to have fingerprints over the camera. The device tends to slip from the top. Like the top can fall top down any moment. The best-balanced device every is the 1520. Feels great!

The black version I have here is not at a finger print magnet, the black 720 I have is certainly one.

Speakers are great! Love the Dolby EQ for speakers too. Dolby Digital Plus is also epic. 5.1 recordings are just brilliant and a treat to the ears.

USB and the headphone jacks are awesome and rigid. The headphone hole is actually the whole thickness of the phone, the phone is that thin. While it’s not light nor heavy, it feels great. It’s dense but certainly not heavy.

The black frame and the grey/black plastic for the RF looks great unlike the other models. The worst is the gold iPhone with the white bars moving around.

Battery life is normal. You will get one day of use (i.e, ~9 hours) no matter whatever you do. Screen on time easily crosses 6 hours for me. Maxed out at 7~8.

Vibration is perfect. Not too lite nor too moving. The haptic feedback is just about perfect for the capacitative keys. Anyway I have turned that off.

RF reception is awesome. Both Cellular & WiFi/NFC/BT.

The design is great too, a neat blend of 925 and the 930. Perhaps this might be the last batch of phones to launch with the Nokia logo on it, combined with the Microsoft logos in the internal & software side.

Was skeptic about Snap 400, but I really can’t feel it even when I pushed it hard. And finally 1GB of RAM. The internal 16GB is a sweet spot combined with the SD which I filled with a 32GB card. I have all the apps & content there, and I face no lag whatsoever. Denim is more of a bug fix & under the hood improvements than features.

No time at all to share camera samples, or unboxing videos and stuff. I have filmed them, but no time to upload and share, all thanks to my 1MBps down and 0.2MBps up ADSL connection from BSNL. To sum it all up, if you’re into WP/Nokia and own anything other than the 1520, just get this 830 period!
